Our activities are growing and the organization is urgently looking for the best possible talent to reinforce its Malawi team.Malawi ProgrammeWeForest is active in the Mount Mulanje Biosphere reserve (Malawi) since 2018. Our main focus in the coming years is to support participatory community forest management of miombo woodlands in Phalombe and Mulanje Districts. We are looking for a practical, field-oriented community outreach assistant, with the relevant community coaching skills, to support the Field manager in community outreach. The role will empower host custodians bordering the Forest Reserve to manage their own resources.CONDITIONS· Motorbike driver’s license.· Duration of 1 year, with potential to extend/upgrade subject to performance, opportunities and funding availability.· Location/station: Likhubula but will be required to work at other locations in Mulanje/Phalombe Districts as the job requires.· Extensive travelling in the project area. Applicant must be willing to reside in remote areas part-time.· Fluent Chichewa speaker.· Full-time position.JOB DESCRIPTIONThrough close supervision of the Community Forest Manager, the Community Outreach Assistant will work with communities in order to:1. Strengthen the governance of Forest Block Committees (FBCs) and Village Natural Resource Management Committees (VNRMCs) by:· Facilitating community mobilisation and organisation of community meetings;· Attending all (relevant) meetings of the Local Forest Management Board and FBCs;· Facilitating effective and regular communication and feedback between FBCs/VNRMCs and their respective constituent communities;· Facilitating effective, inclusive and transparent community representation, and decision-making through these community institutions as a means for consistent community engagement;· Providing training to FBCs/VNRMCs representatives on relevant aspects of management, administration and governance;· Facilitating effective and transparent revenue and other benefits/opportunities distribution mechanisms to ensure the maximum impact and incentives to communities from conservation and forest related business within the co-management area;· Working closely with the LFMB, FBCs and any other community-based organisations in encouraging local people to support in sustainable conservation of the biodiversity of the area;· Working with the LFMB and FBCs in participatory project planning, budgeting, implementation, and monitoring.2. Support valorisation of miombo NTFP and NTFP-conservation enterprises by:· Conducting land use assessments of the co-management areas (including firewood/charcoal utilization),· Aligning miombo product identification with community interests,· Embedding new co-operatives, that focus on miombo valorisation, within the existing community governance structures and ensuring community expectations are managed.3. Assist in data collection for overall project monitoring, community mapping, vegetation surveys and planting performance· Utilize mobile data collection tools in monitoring and mapping activities (GIS Cloud/ODK/KoBoCollect/other).· Monitor seedling survival and growth (including pine in Sukambizi landscape, miombo in Muloza, cedar/companion on the mountain).· Monitor beekeeping performance in co-management blocks.· Monitor nursery performance in Muloza and community cedar nurseries.· Map relevant community demarcations to fit in co-management and land use maps.· Provide M&E updates (reporting confer M&E protocol) for abovementioned project components.CANDIDATE PROFILE· Holder of Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in forestry, forest ecology and conservation, social science, community development or rural development or equivalent.· Fluent in English and Chichewa (both speaking and writing)· Minimum of 3 year’s relevant field, hands-on experience in forest restoration, rural development, management and conservation in Malawi, preferably Mulanje/Phalombe.· Experience working with mobile data collection tools will be a significant advantage.· Experience working with traditional authorities, governance, participatory/community-based forest management and basic miombo tree knowledge will be a significant advantage.· Experience in facilitating business planning and setting up successful and viable community enterprises is highly desirable.· Sensitive to issues of gender, equality and inclusion and experience in mainstreaming these principles in community-based programmes.· Community coacher:o Communication skills: framing concepts and mindsets so the group can better understand, asking questions and listening, engaging in dialogue and discussion for constructive conflict resolution, providing honest feedback, establishing reflective practiceso Networking and relationship building skills: understanding the process for creating true collaboration and trusto Planning and management skills: identifying tasks, developing timelineso Engagement and outreach skills: understanding how to create an inclusive planning process, nurturing meaningful conversation and collaboration, managing group conversations, designing meetingso Understanding human and group dynamics and group process: supporting team building, understanding group interactions, employing cultural competency· Excellent team player: cooperate, support and work well with others to achieve project goals. Share information and contribute effectively to WeForest’s objectives and solving problems· Excellent reporting skills: ability to summarize meeting minutes concisely and truthfully, to provide monitoring data clearly and transparently.· Flexibility: adaptable, resourceful, and receptive to new ideas; willing and able to adjust to changing circumstances. Flexible in terms of traveling and living conditions.· Integrity: honest, reliable, and maintain high ethical standards.
