Director of Maritime Education & Museum Visitor Experience
The Director of Maritime Education & Visitor Experience is a full-time, salaried, exempt position, reporting directly to the Executive Director. The position works to expand and deliver on the organization’s mission to promote and preserve Nantucket’s maritime traditions via learning opportunities and programming in the classroom, at the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum, aboard the Tall Ship Lynx, and throughout the Nantucket Community. The successful candidate will be a thought leader for the organization, serve as an ambassador, build relationships, and lead the visitor services and education teams.
Director Duties & Responsibilities
• Manage Egan Maritime’s Education & Visitor Operations department
• Oversee all education programming at the museum, in the classroom, and on the water to ensure the highest level of engagement among students, teachers, parents, and educators.
• Develop and carry out the museum’s various education and public programs, such as lectures, family, community, and school programs.
• Support the organization's strategic objectives of delivering visitor experiences focusing on experiential marine science education and maritime history.
• Support the Museum’s diversity and inclusion best practices to ensure all visitors feel respected, warmly welcomed, and comfortable.
• Oversee the strategy of revenue-generating activities, including facility rentals, memberships, and gift shop; liaise with the admin team to drive promotion and sales of programs and admissions.
• In conjunction with the Collections Manager and Executive Director, lend perspective on interpretive/education efforts with docents and educators, including developing new exhibitions and maritime culture/heritage-based initiatives.
• Liaise with the Tall Ship Lynx crew and Experiential Educator to build meaningful educational and program offerings aboard the Tall Ship Lynx and other educational vessels.
• Devise and maintain effective methods of tracking outcomes and evaluation metrics
• Work with the Executive Director, other staff, and volunteers/committees to evaluate and grow existing programs and events. Ensure that all programs and events meet and exceed expectations. Develop appropriate current and future programs and events.
• Manage and oversee the department budget with oversight from the Executive Director.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• A bachelor’s degree or master’s in one of the following: Education, History, Museum Education, or a similar field.
• 5-10 years of experience, at least three at a managerial level.
• A general knowledge of maritime history or maritime studies.
• Teaching experience or experience as a museum educator.
• Leader and strategic thinker who can deliver strategic goals through effective delegation and people management.
• Experience planning community programs or events.
• Understand the development needs of students in all age groups.
• Have, or be willing to gain, the knowledge and understanding of the richness of Nantucket’s Maritime Heritage.
• Demonstrate the ability and comfort to work with others collaboratively.
• Possess excellent writing and oratory skills.
• The ability to be creative, develop and execute ideas with the highest standard of excellence.
