The Department of Professional Mariner Training is currently recruiting for part-time professional trainers. The incumbents will be assigned various Professional Mariner Training courses as the needs of the Department, the Director, and their background allows

The incumbents report to the Director of Professional Mariner Training and will be principally be assigned STCW-related professional courses, including Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR), Basic Training, Radar Observer, Radar Renewal, Able Seaman, First Aid & CPR, and ARPA. This can include other courses as well, at the discretion of the Director and as the needs of the Department dictate and their background allows.

Some license-related classes contain experiential education and competency components involving teaching outdoors on the pier, teaching in the College's swimming pool, operating and commanding small vessels, evolutions onboard the Training Ship, and the Firefighting field. Candidates should be comfortable teaching in these environments.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in Marine Transportation, Marine Operations, or a similar related field
• STCW OPERATIONAL Level License, Unlimited/Oceans with experience as either a Third or Second Mate on merchant vessels of unlimited tonnage vessels
• Experience on commercial vessels of any type commensurate with experience, including military sealift, dry cargo, and liquid cargo, gas, bulk, container, passenger, offshore, inland/ brown water, etc
• Current familiarity and experience in the international regulatory environment and SMS
• Experience teaching adult professional subjects for minimum of two or more years
• Experience, training and qualifications required to obtain approval to teach the courses in the field from the U.S. Coast Guard
• Excellent computer skills, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related information systems
• Demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making skills; ability to perform tasks and projects with no guidance Capable of developing sound, detailed analyses to support actions and/or recommendations
• Strong interpersonal, writing and communication skills required. Ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization
• Position may require moderate physical activity based upon the delivered course requirements

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in Maritime education and /or training or familiarization responsibilities, ashore or afloat
• Management level Licensure and commensurate experience
• Graduate Degree(s) in a field relevant to the needs of the Maritime Industry
• Endorsements such as Tankerman PIC DL, LG, Barge, DP, Crowd Mgmt., TOAR, and any such relevant licensure endorsements that enhance the candidate's knowledge base and proficiency
• Graduate of a recognized US Maritime Academy

Exceptions
• License may be in continuity, but preference is given to active licenses, including Medical Certificate
• Relevant USN, USCG, or NOAA sea experience will be considered, but commercial experience is preferred
• International I non-US-Licensed professional mariners and non-degreed (hawsepipe) licensed mariners will be considered should the nature or availability of the pool of applicants warrant

Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The anticipated hourly rate for the position is $65.00 - $75.00 per hour. Review of applications will commence immediately and conclude when position is filled.

Special Notes: FLSA non-exempt position that is eligible for overtime monies.
