PER DIEM PROVINCIAL PROSECUTOR – PARALEGAL
The Ministry of the Attorney General, West Region, is searching for licensed paralegals to provide per diem services. Provincial Prosecutors conduct prosecutions under provincial statutes that include the Provincial Offences Act, Highway Traffic Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, Dog Owners Liability Act, Liquor License Act, and more. Positions are available in Wellington County (Guelph), Huron County (Goderich), Waterloo Region (Kitchener), and Oxford County (Woodstock).
What can I expect to do in this role?
As a provincial prosecutor, you will review Provincial Offences Act Part III informations and reports prepared by police agencies, setting out evidence of incidents and infractions. You will determine where follow up is required and obtain additional information.
You will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice before Justices of the Peace to speak to matters, set dates and to conduct prosecutions. Your appearances will involve both pleas and trials. You will advise police officers. You will negotiate with defence counsel and paralegals, as well as self-represented accused persons, to both manage prosecutions and discuss plea resolutions. You will maintain awareness of developments in the law by reading new legislation, recent decisions of the courts and cases. You will interpret and apply relevant legislation, work within strict time constraints, and use your organizational skills to maintain a high volume of work
How do I qualify?
Experience in provincial offence matters is an asset for this position, but is not required. You are licensed as a Paralegal by the Law Society of Ontario. You maintain errors and omissions insurance. Candidates must have a valid G Ontario driver’s licence and be able to work both in person, and virtually. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and will be subject to a criminal background check.
Candidates may work both as a Defense paralegal, and as a Provincial Prosecutor, but will need to discuss conflict issues with the office they are interested in, prior to accepting employment. Provincial Prosecutors frequently choose to conduct their defence and prosecution practices in different communities, to reduce the possibility of conflict.
Remuneration
Per diem provincial prosecutors are remunerated at a rate of $250 per day (or $125 per half day). Per diem prosecutors are able to work up to 30 days every three months.
When should I apply?
Applications should be submitted on or before Monday June 27. Submissions received after this date may be considered for future positions.
