Main Purpose: Focus, Scope & Impact:
The Director, SRA for north and BIG markets (i.e. SIMA and Myanmar) oversees the strategy for the SRA dedicated franchise and owns the local market regulatory advocacy plan. This plan includes the implementation of globally aligned strategies where relevant. The Director also ensures that all ingredients, formulas, products, labels, food contact materials, packaging, promotional materials, and marketing communications comply with all applicable local regulations and the guidelines and policies of The Coca-Cola Company.
The Director, SRA takes a leadership role within local industry organizations and trade associations to advance the company’s scientific and regulatory agenda. This role involves strategizing the implementation of initiatives, identifying innovations, and sourcing opportunities for competitive advantage. The Director proactively leads within the franchise/markets with a focus on the strategy of scientific and regulatory headwinds This includes formulating a plan of action and influencing business strategies to mitigate risks and enable the business. In addition, the Director works in partnership with local Marketing, PACS, Legal, R&D, and Ti&SC cross-functional teams, among others. This role supports innovation and commercialization compliance by providing scientific and regulatory expertise on new product concepts and ingredients. It also involves engaging with regulatory and third-party authorities as appropriate, to support new product and package launches, including efficient registration processes. The impact of this role is significant within the business, as unlocking and enabling innovation are important steps in successfully marketing any of our products. The role also includes identifying innovations and opportunities for competitive advantage.
The Director, SRA is responsible and accountable for leading tasks/projects and may be required to perform other related duties as assigned by the ASP OU SRA Senior Director II or line manager, as needed by the business.
Accountabilities:
Create and sustain an enabling regulatory environment (strategic advocacy)
• Make a difference and refresh the world by strategizing and leading in the franchise. Advocate with authorities and/or agencies to remove unnecessary restrictions, regulations, or guidelines. The aim is to enable and maximize innovation for new product categories, thereby contributing to the total beverages for life.
• Develop and lead a short-, middle-, and long-term market advocacy strategic plan and roadmap that incorporates credible local reality insights.
• Establish regulatory strategies to obtain government approvals and meet international standards like Codex. This pertains to new ingredients, products, labels, or packaging that support innovation. The implementation will involve collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. These stakeholders include the global SRA team, R&D, Legal, and local trade associations.
• Setting up the implementation plan involves identifying potential regulatory risks, headwinds, and opportunities. These are critical actions for tracking and mitigating regulatory issues. Additionally, noting emerging trends is required. These aspects may impact the reputation of our ingredients, products, packaging, and brands.
• Implement globally aligned strategies and lead the development and execution of local market regulatory advocacy initiatives. These are designed to mitigate current risks and future headwinds that may impact our ingredients, products, packaging, claims, labeling, and communication.
• Proactively work with local PACS, Marketing, and Legal in the dedicated franchise operation to enhance the credibility and reputation of our brands and company.
• Lead and engage with local industry/trade associations and food standards bodies to advocate for our industry/company positions. This protects our business and enables growth.
• Where suitable, represent the Company at relevant local industry organizations and international food standards bodies (e.g., Codex). Provide leadership to external stakeholders such as local food and beverage industry groups to influence outcomes and support our regulatory strategies.
Protect and enable our license to operate (consistent, digitization, effective & efficient compliance, functional excellence & innovation insights)
• This role is responsible for ensuring that all ingredients, formulas, products, labels, food-contact materials, packaging, promotional materials, and marketing communications comply with both relevant local regulations and The Coca-Cola Company's policies and guidelines.
• This role is responsible for protecting TCCC's trade secrets, such as product formulations and flavor information, especially when dealing with regulatory authorities and third parties.
• This role ensures the execution of a digitization roadmap, covering internal processes, databases, and tools to enhance the efficiency of the regulatory compliance process. Our SRA franchise associates are well-equipped to handle these tasks. These measures will lead to the efficient and effective implementation of regulatory compliance systems, processes, and tools. This includes both digitization and outsourcing to third parties or bottlers.
• Lead and provide the scientific and regulatory expertise that supports the innovation and compliance processes for new product concepts, new ingredients, and enhanced claims.
• Within the appointed Franchise Operation, provide regulatory affairs expertise and guidance to identify solutions to regulatory issues affecting our products, ingredients, nutrition regulations, or labeling.
• Provide expert support on issues related to Crisis Management (IMCR)
• Manage approvals for ingredients, formulas, products, packages, labels, claims, and communications using various compliance-related tools, such as Picasso, CCAP, etc.
• Engage with regulatory authorities as appropriate to support new product/package launches including efficient third-party registrations.
Networked organization
• Building, maintaining, and enhancing relationships or networks with external experts, government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders. These relations relate to food regulations, food safety, nutrition, and health, among other subjects, all aimed at advancing The Coca-Cola Company's strategy, growth agenda, and positions.
• Maintain a relevant network of SRA experts, both internally and externally, to stay updated with the latest regulatory requirements, laws, and changes in the industry trends and regulatory framework.
• Proactively inform the country and operating unit about scientific and regulatory emerging issues. This will increase their understanding of the issues, help formulate a plan of action, and influence business strategies to mitigate the risks.
• Proactively work with the local TI&SC cross-functional team, Marketing, and Legal, as well as collaborate with Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability (PACS). This coordination focuses on internal and external communications opportunities relevant to the SRA function.
Key Skills/Experience Required:
• BSc., MSc. Or Ph.D. In Chemistry, Food Science, or related technical fields.
• Requires 12+ years of technical mastery in the advocacy regulatory compliance process and product development, with at least 5+ years specific to SRA regional roles and 5+ years in the food & beverages industry, government, or a related sector. Applicants must have a proven track record of successful advocacy and leadership roles in relevant external organizations, committees, or boards.
• Solid experience in scientific and regulatory advocacy, as well as understanding the regulatory framework in a variety of fields within the regional/ multimarket food and beverage industry, is essential. Experience in risk management and impact assessment is also valuable.
• Applicants must have excellent interpersonal skills as well as strong written and oral communication skills. Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in other international languages relevant to the Operating Unit is a plus.
