YPLEA Navigator & Community Outreach Coordinator
• Full-time, 37.5 hours per week
• $72,000-$80,000 per year
• This is a term position until March 31, 2026

Job Summary

Reporting to the Lawyer/Executive Director, the YPLEA Navigator & Community Outreach Coordinator helps YPLEA (Law Line) service users facing legal issues in the areas of civil and family law through the provision of legal information, help with legal forms and processes, referrals to other service providers, and direct advocacy where appropriate.

The YPLEA Navigator & Community Outreach Coordinator will also work with the Lawyer/Executive Director to build relationships with established legal service providers in British Columbia and in enhancing the collaboration between existing support and advocacy services in the Yukon.

While prior experience with the Canadian legal system is an asset for the position it is not required.

Main Responsibilities
• Schedules and attends in person and phone/video meetings with individuals requiring YPLEA services, both at the YPLEA office and in the offices of community partners and other agencies.
• Helps individuals identify next steps in their path through the legal system, including any steps that may not require a lawyer or steps that can be taken by clients while they are waiting to receive legal assistance.
• Where appropriate, provides direct advocacy services to YPLEA service users.
• Connects individuals with community supports and other legal services and programs.
• Builds and maintains a network of relationships with community organizations, governments, and other advocates across the Yukon and in British Columbia.
• Identifies and acts on opportunities to improve the availability of YPLEA services in Yukon’s rural communities.
• Identifies and maintains knowledge of resources and programs in the Yukon.
• Participates in organizational initiatives such as strategic planning and team training sessions.
• Maintains statistics for monthly and yearly reporting.

Work Environment
• Full-time position (37.5 hours per week), primarily during regular office hours with flexibility in hours and ability to work from home (when tasks permit).
• Attendance at varied worksites as required (YPLEA office, offices of other community agencies or services, at courts and tribunals).
• Regular travel to Yukon communities outside of Whitehorse.
• Frequent contact with diverse clientele and stakeholders, including with vulnerable populations.
• Competing demands on time and occasional critical deadlines that require adjustment of priorities and overtime.
• Close collaboration with YPLEA’s other staff, including the Administrative Director and Staff Lawyer.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

Education:
• Post-secondary education in justice, social work or a related field and/or equivalency obtained through course work and work experience.

Experience:
• Minimum two years’ experience providing direct service to clients, including individuals from vulnerable populations.

Other knowledge/skills:
• Knowledge of the civil and family justice system and related resources and supports, preferably in the Yukon context.
• Proven ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with individuals and stakeholders in organizations/governments.
• Excellent organizational, communication and writing skills with an ability to problem-solve.
• Strong work ethic, good judgment, and ability to work well in a small team environment.
• Use of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and ability to conduct internet-based research. Facility with social media is an asset.
• Clear understanding of the difference between legal information and legal advice and judgment about when to involve YPLEA’s lawyers to assist a client.
• Ability to interact with clients from vulnerable populations and from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in a manner that is respectful and sensitive.
• Cultural awareness of Indigenous peoples, culture, and history. Understanding of current Indigenous issues, including in Yukon’s modern treaty landscape.
• Ability to communicate in a language other than English is an asset.

Other:
• Valid Class 5 drivers’ license
• Legally eligible to work in Canada.
• A criminal record check is a requirement for this position.
