We are recruiting an Animal Care Assistant to join the team of a West Cumbria based animal rehoming charity. This vacancy is due to internal promotion.
The successful candidate will have previously worked or volunteered in an animal care environment such as kennels, catteries, vets or similar and will understand animal care and be confident in communication with members of the public.
You should also be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in all weathers.
Your new job
• Providing daily care of the resident animals at the centre: exercise, feed, given social play, training time, grooming and health checked
• Working with volunteers and other staff members to ensure daily duties are completed in the time and to the standards required. i.e., laundry, cleaning animal accommodation
• To act in a manner that supports the health and safety of all
• Assessing animals for changes in behaviours, eating habits etc, identifying any issues or concerns and reporting on the animal’s condition to the Animal Rehoming Manager or delegated person
• Ensure that any animal medications or treatments prescribed are administered per the instructions
• Perform general admin such as updating animal records and forms, filing, and printing
• To always keep control of the animals by using and enforcing agreed handling techniques and applying safety procedures to ensure the safety of all and to maintain consistency in handling
• Handle telephone calls regarding the animals, taking enquiries for re homing, adoption etc as required
• Attend animal and home assessments and Meet & Greets
• Additional duties may include – general tidying of the site and internal areas, contributing to focus groups, and attending meetings and/or internal/external events
This is not an exhaustive list of duties as the centre operates from a small team base and tasks arise that may need attention by you or may be allocated to you if within your capabilities.
About you
• Previous experience of working, or volunteering, with animals (especially cats, dogs and furries)
• To be non-judgmental and apply courtesy, consideration, respect, and support for all animals, and people
• Ability to recognise and understand behavioural changes in cats and dogs (eg: off their food or mood changes)
• Happy to work shifts (anytime between 8am and 8pm which can include weekends) on a rota basis – 42 hours per week
• Live within commutable distance of Egremont, West Cumbria (or willing to relocate)
• Have a driving licence and your own transport as the location is not on a bus route
• Positive, motivational, flexible, and solution-oriented attitude
• Happy working outdoors in all weathers
• Able to identify changes in animal behaviour and mood
• Attention to detail and organised
Salary and benefits
• Salary of £9.50 per hour – rising to £10.42 in April
• Opportunity to increase salary over time with incremental rises
• Permanent staff position
• Full time – 42 hours per week or Part time (20 hours per week)
• 28 days holiday per year
