The position is a permanent full-time position.

As well as providing the specialists and managers of tomorrow with the interdisciplinary knowledge they will need in their future careers, we seek to advance their problem-solving skills and their awareness of their responsibility in and to the world.
With the applied sciences at the heart of all we do, we work hand in hand to create a visionary campus with a positive and enduring effect on Hamburg and the surrounding region.
HAW Hamburg. Because you can make a difference.
YOUR ROLE
To strengthen its academic profile, the Department of Design at HAW Hamburg is looking for a qualified individual to teach classes in the field of “History of Art and Design” within the university’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes. This is an essential core subject within the theoretical foundations module group which covers academic theory in the degree programmes of “Communication Design”, “Illustration” as well as “Fashion Design, Costume Design and Textile Design” on a cross-cutting basis. Students are taught to take a critical and considered approach to visual and applied arts in their respective historical contexts as well as their relevance to the present. Moreover, students gain essential knowledge regarding the theory of curating as well as the practice of planning and organising exhibitions. The successful candidate will be responsible for demonstrating the fundamental relevance of arts and cultural studies within their historical contexts as well as their current dimension in relation to design studies, and to explicitly support students in their research-related activities and development.
YOUR PROFILE
You have a university degree in art history, also covering the history of design, as well as a qualified doctorate in the subjects named above.
You are able to demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in the application or development of academic knowledge and methods over the course of at least five years of professional practice (with at least 50% of full working hours), at least three years of which must have been outside the university sector. Besides academic work and teaching, you should have proven experience working in museums, galleries or other institutions in the fields relevant to the professorship.
You are expected to have a sound, comprehensive knowledge of art and design history. In addition, you should have experience in relation to the theory and practice of curating. Specific contents relevant to the degree programmes of Illustration and Communication Design must be offered. Besides proven experience in planning and organising exhibitions, research skills and networking within the research field are required.
Experience in academic teaching within the fields named above is also an application requirement. The history of art and design is taught in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes of Communication Design, Illustration, Fashion Design, Costume Design and Textile Design on a cross-cutting basis and is meant to be introduced to all study programmes within the Department of Design. Teaching and research should be conjoined, not least within the scope of the practice of curating. Applicants should be able to outline the thematic connection between the field and the study programmes named above.
Teaching will mainly take place in German. However, the ability and willingness to offer theory-based courses in English, especially for the increasing number of international students, is explicitly desired. (Your language skills in English will be verified by means of a summary of the presentation lecture in English (written and oral). Further language skills are desirable.
We expect a willingness to collaborate and take the initiative in networking the teaching with the offerings of other colleagues from the Department of Design. Besides teaching, your duties include contributing to conceptual, organisational and administrative work within the department.
You are expected to use digital formats, scenarios and tools in a fruitful combination with traditional forms of teaching in order to improve teaching and learning within the classes.
