ABOUT THE COMPANY
Mbarara University of Science and Technology also known as MUST lies on the banks of the scenic meandering Rwizi River a tributary of Lake Victoria in Mbarara Municipality along the Kabale highway, 286 kilometers, southwest of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. As one of the main Rivers in the region, the Rwizi is a source of water for thousands of local people and their livestock. Snaking through the famous hills of southwestern Uganda, the Rwizi was always a beautiful river that brought pride to the people in the area due to its sky blue waters and the purposes they served. Today the Rwizi’s waters are brown because of sedimentation.
MUST is a thriving residential campus and community where Students live in ‘villages’. On campus are two halls of residence popularly referred to as the Gents and Ladies flats. The rest of the student population live around the University campus in private but accredited hostel facilities by the Dean of Students office in collaboration with the Mbarara District Police station.
Learning and living are intimately intertwined at MUST. Extra Curricular activities, professional student associations and clubs, performances, forums and sports and games beckon students as well as the communities around the University. The Student Government known as the Guild Government is a melting pot of young and ambitious leaders who seek for democratic mandate and offer leadership on behalf of the student population. The Students’ Guild mission is to improve the quality of student’s life at the university, both academically and socially by addressing student needs and concerns, providing financial structure for student clubs and organisations and representing the student body in a professional manner.
There are also a number of well-known and established student activities, such as KinaMUST, cultural gala, bazaar, freshmen and fresh women ball that add to the unique tradition and experience of being a student at MUST.
MUST is a public university also accredited by the National Council for Higher Education in Uganda. Over the years it has won acclaimed national and international recognition for best practices in outreach and community relations from Association of Commonwealth Universities, European Union, Civil Society of Uganda, produces the best development workers and health care professionals.
JOB SUMMARY
1. To lead and oversee the design, development, and testing of prototypes and emergingtechnologies.2. To guide multidisciplinary innovation teams through the innovation process byensuring the integration of cutting-edge societal solutions.Requirements1. Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science (or any other related field incomputing), Materials Science, Industrial Design, or any related field from arecognized institution.2. An honours bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science,Industrial Design, or a related field from a recognized institution.3. A PhD or PhD track in any of the above fields shall be an added advantage.4. Minimum of six (6) years’ experience in prototyping, product development, or arelated field.5. Proven experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and managing complex projects.6. Experience in a university or research environment shall be a big asset.7. Additional qualifications or training in intellectual property shall be an addedadvantage.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Leading and managing the development of prototypes, from concept through to finalproduct.2. Working with faculty, researchers, and students to design and create functionalprototypes that demonstrate the feasibility of new technologies.3. Utilizing advanced prototyping techniques, including 3D printing, CNC machining,electronics integration, and software development.4. Overseeing multiple prototyping projects simultaneously to ensure that they aredelivered on time and within budget.5. Developing project plans and schedules.6. Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders (including industry partners), toensure alignment on project goals and deliverables.7. Collaborating with relevant stakeholders to identify potential commercialopportunities for prototypes and technologies developed.8. Assisting in the preparation of patent applications, licensing agreements, and other IPrelated activities.9. Facilitating the transfer of technology from the university to industry partners,startups, or other external entities.10.Leading and mentoring teams of engineers, designers, innovators, inventors andtechnicians - providing guidance and support in their professional development11.Fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment that encourages creativityand problem-solving.12.Conducting research to identify new tools, materials, and processes that can enhancethe prototyping capabilities of the university.13.Publishing research findings in academic journals and presenting at conferences.14.Managing the day-to-day operations of the prototyping lab, including equipmentmaintenance, safety protocols, and inventory management15.Ensuring that the lab is equipped with the latest tools and technologies required foradvanced prototyping.16.Performing any other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Directoror University Management.
