Are you passionate about worker safety and the maritime industry? Want to make a difference and maybe save a few lives along the way?
This Safety and Health Specialist inspects marine industry jobsites which includes inspections of seafood processing operations, commercial diving operations, marine freight handling, boat and ship building, marine construction of docks, piers and marine infrastructure marines and vessel repair facilities.
This is challenging work and you'll be expected to take the lead on complicated maritime related investigations including related fatalities. You'll also consult with employees and employers on L&I's process of investigations. You'll be one of four inspectors doing this work statewide; no day will ever be the same. Learn the dynamics of the maritime industry, become an able investigator in this field.
Within the first 6-12 months you'll be required to successful complete DOSH new hire training. Obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential within six months of hire and maintain throughout employment. You'll also engage with co-workers in the field and participate in inspections and investigations regarding maritime operations. Your ability to steadily accumulate knowledge will be vital to your success. Additionally, you'll successfully assume field operations without supervision after guided inspection and investigation training.
Some of what you'll do
• Complete DOSH compliance inspector training.
• Job shadow senior inspectors and key in information during inspections and investigations.
• Participate in extensive evidence gathering and analytical investigation relative to hazard recognition, employer knowledge, employee exposure, and accurate code interpretation.
• Strictly apply current departmental policies as found in the Compliance Manual, applicable WA administrative codes and the applicable RCWs.
• Attend necessary training courses and conferences to improve and maintain professional knowledge.
• Work odd hours including infrequent overnight travel and may include travel in inclement weather.
Who should apply – What are we looking for
We seek safety professionals with journeyman level experience in the maritime industry or U.S. Navy or Coast Guard Vessel Inspection experience within the last ten years. Viable applicants will have a minimum of four years of full-time experience in the maritime industry, either cargo handling, ship building, or active duty naval service and three years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant, inspector, or related experience.
Must possess a valid driver's license and will be required to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license throughout the term of employment.
A valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential would be preferred prior to hiring and must be obtained within six months of hire and maintained throughout the term of employment.
What we are looking for
• Thorough understanding of safety and health rules and regulations with working knowledge of current State regulations involving maritime safety.
• Strong written, verbal skills with ability to write comprehensive and concise reports detailing identified hazards.
• Good interpersonal and verbal communication.
• Ability to work independently.
• Use a computer with working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and the Internet to draft correspondence respond to email and conduct research.
• Commitment and passion to ensure worker safety.
