Minoterie de Matadi, an affiliate of Seaboard, operates in the Democratic Republic of Congo, serving the Bas Congo, greater Kinshasa, and upriver regions. We manufacture and distribute high-quality wheat and maize-based products for bakeries and households. As the market leader in wheat flour, we offer a diverse range of flours, including special, long conservation, complete, break, patisserie, cake, and industrial bakery flours. General Purpose
The purpose of the Technical Director role is to lead and manage the maintenance, project execution, staff development, and sustainability initiatives at Midema’s Matadi location. This position ensures the efficient operation and continuous improvement of all technical aspects, aligning with business objectives and sustainability goals. The Technical Director will also oversee risk assessments and implement measures to mitigate operational risks, contributing to the overall safety and sustainability of Midema’s operations.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
Maintenance (40%)
• Develop, organize, and supervise the overall maintenance strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
• Manage equipment criticality classification, inspection schedules, lubrication schedules, preventive and corrective maintenance actions.
• Ensure effective management of critical spare parts and minimize non-cash working capital.
• Track and report maintenance-related KPIs, such as energy consumption, emergency downtime, maintenance costs, and man-hours per metric ton.
• Optimize roll stock management to minimize downtime and efficiency losses.
• Oversee spare parts warehouse management and inventory monitoring, ensuring alignment with circular economy principles.
• Supervise maintenance of all Midema assets, including guest houses, sales outlets, and the CCLD clinic.
• Provide technical advice and project oversight in Kinshasa.
• Implement Continuous Improvement tools to enhance systems, processes, and equipment.
• Collaborate with purchasing teams for cost-effective procurement and adherence to vendor agreements.
• Ensure conformity and quality of purchased parts and consumables.
• Train the team on best maintenance practices, incorporating the latest technology and sustainability knowledge.
• Supervise vehicle workshop, carpentry, and utilities.
• Enforce high standards for policies, procedures, housekeeping, and workmanship.
• Maintain an updated library of as-built drawings, manuals, and SOPs.
Projects (35%)
• Manage a pipeline of OPEX projects, prioritizing based on capital expenditure, sustainability impact, and execution timelines.
• Collaborate with the business to execute OPEX projects efficiently.
• Serve as a Technical Advisor on the CAPEX Master Plan and Innovation Projects.
• Prepare Capex purchase approval files and ensure proper governance and monitoring of project costs.
• Oversee the implementation of approved CAPEX/Projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget adherence, and alignment with sustainability targets.
• Contribute to projects that enhance the long-term sustainability of Midema’s operations.
Staff Training & Development (15%)
• Organize the structure of the technical department, including creating organizational charts, job descriptions, and setting annual objectives.
• Develop and implement comprehensive career development plans for key technical positions.
• Prepare and oversee the annual training program for the technical department.
Sustainability & Circularity Integration (5%)
• Integrate sustainability and circular economy principles into all maintenance and project operations.
• Lead initiatives to reduce Midema’s environmental impact.
• Collaborate with other departments to identify and implement sustainability projects.
Assets Risk Assessment (5%)
• Review Risk Assessment Audit reports and prepare action plans to close identified gaps.
• Identify minimum requirements for risk assessment and prepare proactive measures to mitigate operational risks.
Education & Experience
• 10+ years of experience, preferably as a Maintenance or Technical Manager.
• Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
• Experience in milling, feed manufacturing, bakery industries, bulk handling, or production environments is a plus.
• Strong experience managing a large team of engineers and technicians.
• Experience in sustainability and circular economy practices in a technical environment is a plus.
• Experience working and living in Africa is a plus.
• Fluent in French and English.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Strong knowledge and application of Continuous Improvement tools.
• Aptitude to learn new skills and work in environments with minimal established routines.
• Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
• Knowledge of and experience with CMMS is a plus.
Working Environment & Conditions
• Must be in good physical health due to location.
• Expatriate must be able to operate outside normal comfort zone at times.
• Travel will be minimal.
• Location has a high degree of hardship associated with it. Demonstrated experience in a high hardship location required
